Pink October began in the 90s in the United States, with only a few American states carrying out isolated campaigns on the subject. After being approved by the American Congress, October was nationally recognized as breast cancer prevention month. After that, the pink ribbons, which became the symbol of the campaign, began to appear.
The G.Komen for The Cure foundation was responsible for the symbol in the first race for the cure of breast cancer held in 1990 in New York City. Runners were given pink bows to wear during the race and then they began to be distributed in public places, and other events.
In Brazil, the engagement campaign began in 2002 when the Obelisto do Ibirapuera, in São Paulo, was illuminated with pink lights.
Breast cancer is a type of tumor that especially affects the female population, being the second type that causes the most death in Brazil. The disease is more common in women over the age of 40, but there is a possibility that it may appear before that. When diagnosed early, the chances are 95% of cure.
